I’m kind of a broken toy.

When I tell people there’s something wrong with my brain, they think I’m kidding. Like many others, I try to use humor to gloss over my awkwardness or pain. There are moments when I’m hilarious, and other times when I’m just awkward. I rarely know ahead of time which it’s going to be. I guess I’m wounded by life among humans here on earth less than some and more than others. I consider myself an introvert in recovery. I’ve done some public speaking and been interviewed on the news a few times in the course of my career as a firefighter. It always feels a little like I’m drowning as I desperately try to keep anyone from noticing. I think Dave Barry coined the term “stationary panic” which I think is an apt enough description.

I told you that to tell you this. God has blessed me beyond measure. He’s given me age and life-changing experiences that work through the spiritual gifts he has also given me, which help me see things a few degrees off normal. That’s where I got the name, “A Little Off Devotions.” I don’t believe I offer any unorthodox theological ideas. If you pin me down (Please don’t. That would be weird.) I describe my theology as “Biblical Orthodoxy.” What I hope I offer is a slightly unique look at a plain truth of a scripture passage and an encouragement of how that truth might look if you lived it today. Maybe just a bit at first. Started. Not mastered. These ideas are best chewed on for a while. Please take a risk and see if what I write is a truth worth living, but always compare my ideas to the truth of scripture because, honestly, I got some problems.
